Major Green Energy Project Cancelled in the UK

Air Products, the world’s largest hydrogen producer, has abandoned plans to build a £2 billion green energy factory in Britain, citing a lack of government support. The project, which would have converted imported ammonia into green hydrogen, was expected to create 3,000 jobs and contribute to the UK’s goal of becoming a global leader in low-carbon hydrogen.
The company accused the UK government of failing to provide necessary support measures, specifically excluding hydrogen production from imported renewable ammonia. In a letter to a local MP, Air Products’ UK boss, Suzanne Lowe, criticized the government’s policies, stating they left the company with no viable path to build the facility.
This decision comes after Air Products also withdrew from three green hydrogen projects in the US, raising questions about the viability of these projects. Critics argue that “green hydrogen” is not as environmentally friendly as claimed, as its production relies on the Haber-Bosch process, which uses natural gas and emits significant amounts of CO2.
The cancellation of the £2 billion project marks a significant setback for the UK’s green energy ambitions and highlights the challenges of creating a sustainable hydrogen industry without substantial government subsidies.
