Measles Outbreaks Continue Across North America

Health officials in Arizona have reported four linked measles cases in Navajo County, marking the state's first outbreak this year. Nationally, the U.S. saw 122 new measles cases last week, with four in Texas. Outbreaks in Pennsylvania and Michigan have officially ended.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 1,168 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. as of Friday. In Texas, where the nation's largest outbreak occurred earlier this year, officials will now update case counts only once a week, signaling a slowdown in the outbreak.
Three major measles outbreaks are ongoing in North America. Ontario, Canada, has recorded 2,009 cases since mid-October, with its first death reported this week in a baby with congenital measles and preexisting conditions. Alberta, Canada, has seen 761 cases, while Mexico's Chihuahua state reports 1,940 cases and four deaths.
Other U.S. states with active outbreaks include Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, and Oklahoma. In the U.S., two elementary school-aged children in West Texas and an adult in New Mexico have died from measles this year, all of whom were unvaccinated.
Measles, a highly contagious airborne virus, was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000.
