Trump Must Not Prolong the Ukraine War to Spite Putin

The conflict in Ukraine is a tragedy, but further American involvement risks prolonging the war and delaying the inevitable. President Trump has set a deadline for a peace deal with Russia, demanding a ceasefire by August 8. If Moscow fails to make progress, the U.S. will retaliate with sanctions and tariffs.
Trump, who recently announced a new arms sale to Ukraine, appears increasingly frustrated with Putin. However, his campaign promise to end the war quickly now faces significant challenges. Ukraine and Russia remain far apart on key issues, with neither side willing to accept terms that would lead to a sustainable peace.
Trump holds significant leverage over Ukraine, as the country’s resistance relies heavily on U.S. aid. By threatening to cut assistance, Trump can push Ukraine to the bargaining table. He has also offered concessions to Russia, including no NATO membership for Ukraine and the ceding of occupied territories.
Despite these efforts, Putin has proven intransigent, continuing to escalate the conflict with drone attacks and missile strikes. Trump’s frustration with Putin has led him to shorten the original 50-day deadline, reflecting his growing impatience.
While Trump’s dealmaking skills are well-known, the reality of the situation is far more complex. Ukraine is unlikely to regain significant territory, and the war has become a costly and destructive stalemate. Prolonging the conflict to spite Putin would only worsen the tragedy, risking even greater losses.
In the end, Trump must prioritize peace over personal grievances. The war in Ukraine demands a pragmatic approach, not one driven by spite or political optics. The stakes are too high to allow the conflict to continue unnecessarily.
