Bipartisan Senators Push for Health Care Price Transparency

A bipartisan group of senators is advancing legislation to codify President Donald Trump’s executive order mandating price transparency in health care. The Patients Deserve Price Tags Act, co-sponsored by Sens. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., and John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., aims to provide consumers with clear pricing information before purchasing health care services.
The bill, supported by Republicans Sens. Tim Sheehy of Montana, Chuck Grassley, and Joni Ernst of Iowa, as well as New Hampshire Democrat Sen. Maggie Hassan, requires hospitals to disclose pricing for services and provide itemized bills for health plans. This measure aligns with Trump’s February 2020 executive order, which sought to enhance price transparency but was not strictly enforced under the Biden administration.
Senator Grassley praised the bill on X, stating, “We need SUNSHINE on health care prices to bring accountability. Consumers should know the price of health care services before they buy. It’s common sense. This bill will hold health care providers accountable and give patients timely and accurate information.”
The legislation seeks to empower patients by enabling them to “shop for the highest-quality care at the lowest cost,” as Trump envisioned. Ilaria Santangelo of Patient Rights Advocate highlighted the bill’s potential to equip Americans with the information needed to afford care and lead healthier lives.
The push for price transparency has garnered rare bipartisan support, with similar efforts underway in the House. Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and Republican Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Andy Biggs have co-sponsored a complementary bill. This initiative reflects a growing consensus that greater transparency in health care pricing is essential for reducing costs and improving patient outcomes.
