Federal Grand Jury Indicts Rep. LaMonica McIver for Interfering with Law Enforcement

A federal grand jury has indicted Democrat Rep. LaMonica McIver on three counts of forcibly impeding and interfering with federal law enforcement officers at the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark. McIver faces a maximum of 17 years in prison if convicted on all charges. Last month, a judge ordered her to surrender her firearms and prohibited her from traveling outside the U.S. According to U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, the indictment stems from McIver’s alleged actions last month, including verbally abusing and physically assaulting federal agents. ICE bodycam footage reportedly showed McIver threatening to destroy the agents’ careers and making inappropriate physical contact. “No one is above the law — politicians or otherwise,” Habba emphasized. McIver has released a statement regarding the indictment, though details of her response were not provided. The criminal complaint is available for review. This case highlights the ongoing tensions between federal law enforcement and certain members of Congress, particularly in matters involving immigration and detention facilities.
