Explosion at Chinese Chemical Plant Leaves 5 Dead, 19 Injured

An explosion at a chemical plant in Weifang, China, has resulted in at least five deaths, 19 injuries, and six people missing. The incident occurred at Shandong Youdao Chemical’s facility shortly before noon on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. Videos shared on social media showed thick orange and black smoke billowing over the plant.
Local authorities reported that 55 vehicles and 232 rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene, with additional reinforcements sent to support ongoing operations. A nearby factory worker, surnamed Meng, described hearing a loud “boom” followed by a violent shake and a strong gust of wind. “The airflow rushed in through the window, and if I had been a bit closer, it might have thrown me against the wall,” she told CNN.
The explosion caused significant damage to doors and windows in nearby buildings, underscoring the force of the blast. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to locate the six missing individuals and assess the full impact of the incident.
