DOE Unveils New Supercomputer to Accelerate AI and Fusion Development

The Department of Energy (DOE) has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking supercomputer, NERSC-10, designed to revolutionize advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and fusion energy. Announced on May 30, 2025, the system is expected to deliver more than 10 times the performance of the current leading supercomputer at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) in California.
NERSC-10, set to be delivered in 2026, will be developed in collaboration with Dell Technologies and powered by Nvidia chips. The supercomputer is named after Jennifer Doudna, a biochemist and Nobel laureate, in recognition of her groundbreaking work in gene editing. Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, praised Doudna for her ability to accelerate scientific discovery.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized the supercomputer’s role in advancing clean energy technologies, calling it a “powerhouse for rapid innovation.” NERSC-10 will play a critical role in accelerating research and development in fusion energy, a priority for the DOE, as well as enhancing AI capabilities across various scientific domains. The initiative underscores the agency’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to achieve its energy and climate goals.
