DOJ Launches Criminal Investigation into Andrew Cuomo Over COVID-19 Handling

The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, focusing on allegations he lied about his management of the COVID-19 pandemic. The inquiry, launched close to a month ago, comes after senior DOJ officials dismissed corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Rep. James Comer, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, called for Cuomo's prosecution over statements made during congressional investigations into his pandemic response. Specifically, Cuomo is accused of misleading Congress about his directive to transfer over 9,000 recovering COVID-19 patients from hospitals to nursing homes in New York state.
In March 2020, Cuomo issued an order requiring nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients, which he later rescinded amid concerns it worsened outbreaks. Then-Rep. Brad Wenstrup, chairman of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, accused Cuomo of making "multiple criminally false statements" to Congress about the handling of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes.
Cuomo is currently running for mayor of New York against Adams, who is seeking reelection as an independent. Cuomo is among 11 Democrats competing in the primary, set for June 24.
