Focus on the Family Faces Backlash After Being Labeled a 'Hate Group' by SPLC

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has drawn sharp criticism after listing Focus on the Family, a conservative Christian nonprofit, on its "hate map." The SPLC, known for targeting extremist groups, now includes mainstream conservative and Christian organizations alongside Klan chapters, branding Focus on the Family an "anti-LGBTQ+ hate group."
Focus on the Family President Jim Daly told The Daily Signal that the designation has led to increased harassment and threats against staff, with protesters even blocking the nonprofit's entrance. Daly emphasized that the group's biblical stance on marriage is being weaponized against them, despite their commitment to loving others, even those who disagree.
The SPLC's "hate map" has also had practical consequences for Focus on the Family, including severed business relationships. Daly noted that seven technology companies abandoned contracts after discovering the nonprofit's stance on marriage. Similarly, a 48-year insurance partnership was terminated due to the SPLC's designation.
Daly stressed that Focus on the Family will not yield to cancel culture, vowing to remain steadfast despite growing pressure. "We’re gonna stand firm in the river of culture," he said. "We’re not going to be moved by intimidation. We’re not going to be moved by the herd or cancel culture mentality."
The SPLC's inclusion of conservative Christian groups on its "hate map" has sparked accusations of bias, with Daly calling the practice "evil" and "horrible" for the Christian community. The controversy highlights the broader cultural conflict over religious freedom and the growing influence of cancel culture in shaping public discourse.
