Trump Signs Law Revoking California’s Gas-Powered Car Ban

President Trump today signed into law a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution, revoking California’s green light from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban new gas-powered cars by 2035. The move, supported by a bipartisan Congress, also included two related resolutions.
The California rule, known as Advanced Clean Cars II, aimed to ban the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035. EPA approval was required for the rule to take effect, and the Biden administration had granted that approval. Critics argued the rule would reshape the national automobile market, limit consumer freedom, and increase vehicle prices, disproportionately harming lower-income Americans.
Daren Bakst, Director of CEI’s Center for Energy and Environment, called the rule a direct ban on gas cars, not a de facto one. He praised Congress and President Trump for defending individual freedom and empowering Americans to choose their vehicles. CEI Senior Fellow Marlo Lewis added that the action terminated a bureaucratic power grab, restoring the rule of law and promoting a competitive auto industry and freer society.
The repeal marks a significant shift in national policy, safeguarding consumer choice and preventing potential market manipulation by California and its allies.
