Flights Grounded Across Russia After Cyberattack on Aeroflot

Flights across Russia were suspended after a cyberattack targeted Aeroflot, the country’s largest airline, on Monday. A pro-Ukrainian hacker group, Silent Crow, along with Belarusian hackers, claimed responsibility for the attack, citing Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine as their motive. The group stated in a Telegram post that it had gained control of Aeroflot’s critical systems, including terabytes of internal data, and “destroyed” the airline’s accessible systems.
Screenshots shared by the hackers allegedly showed access to Aeroflot’s internal systems, including its active directory of users and file shares. The group also claimed to have obtained the personal data of all Russians who have ever flown with Aeroflot. Aeroflot’s website was temporarily unavailable, displaying an error message indicating it had been “temporarily restricted.”
Footage from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport showed a departure screen with dozens of canceled flights. Russian prosecutors confirmed that more than 60 flights were canceled due to the “hacker attack” and announced a criminal investigation into the incident. The cyberattack has raised concerns over data security and the broader implications of cyber warfare in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
