Federal Trade Commission to Investigate Transgender Medicine Industry

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has indicated it has a strong basis to begin investigating the transgender medicine industry following a workshop titled "The Dangers of Gender-Affirming Care for Minors." The workshop, hosted by the FTC, aimed to gather information from parents and patients about potential deceptive practices in the industry.
Mark Meador, an FTC official, stated that the workshop provided "extremely alarming and concerning information" that could form the foundation for a legal case. The FTC has the authority to investigate and prevent "unfair or deceptive" practices under its enabling statute.
Key concerns include allegations that medical professionals used emotional blackmail, such as claiming children would commit suicide if not allowed to transition. The FTC will issue a public request for information on transgender medical interventions next week to gather additional details and identify potential violations.
The agency can use subpoenas to compel individuals, companies, and medical practices to provide documents and testimony. If violations are found, the FTC can seek injunctions to stop harmful practices. Meador emphasized the need to address deception comprehensively, ensuring all entities involved are held accountable.
The investigation reflects the FTC's commitment to protecting consumers from potential fraud and exploitation in the transgender medicine industry.
