GOP Senators Warn Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill Faces Veto Over Spending Concerns

GOP senators have issued a stern warning to President Donald Trump, stating his "big beautiful bill" risks being blocked unless he prioritizes spending cuts and reducing the national debt. Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson, a fiscal conservative, threatened to halt the legislative process during a Sunday CNN interview, calling the bill's impact on the debt "immoral" and a threat to future generations.
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul also criticized the legislation, arguing it would explode the national debt by $5 trillion. While Paul expressed support for tax cuts and spending reductions, he deemed the proposed cuts insufficient and warned the bill's deficit implications pose the greatest threat to national security.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) echoed Paul's concerns, describing the national debt as a critical issue but acknowledged the difficulty of reversing decades of fiscal irresponsibility. "You don’t turn an aircraft carrier on a dime," he said, emphasizing the need for gradual progress.
The bill narrowly passed the House on May 22 by a 215-214 vote, but its fate in the Senate remains uncertain as GOP senators demand more substantial spending reforms. The ongoing debate highlights growing political tensions over debt, deficits, and the future of U.S. fiscal policy.
