FBI Suppressed Intelligence on Chinese Election Meddling, Senate Documents Reveal

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, released emails Tuesday revealing the FBI suppressed intelligence about potential Chinese interference in the 2020 election. The FBI recalled an intelligence report on Sept. 25, 2020, detailing claims from a confidential human source that the Chinese government was producing tens of thousands of fraudulent driver’s licenses to create mail-in votes for then-presidential candidate Joe Biden. The report was deemed not “authoritative” by FBI headquarters, despite concerns from Albany field office staff that suppressing the information could be “dangerous.”
Then-FBI Director Christopher Wray had testified before the Senate on Sept. 24, 2020, stating, “We have not seen historically any kind of coordinated national voter fraud effort in a major election, whether it is by mail or otherwise.” Internal documents showed the FBI prevented other intelligence agencies from accessing the report and did not fully investigate the allegations.
Grassley criticized the FBI’s actions, calling it a “deeply broken institution” and emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. He praised FBI Director Kash Patel for efforts to restore trust. The documents highlight concerns about political decision-making within the FBI and its failure to fulfill its national security mission during the 2020 election.
