Ben Askren’s Near-Death Experience Leads to Faith Awakening

Former UFC fighter Ben Askren, 41, has shared his harrowing journey of survival and newfound faith after a near-death experience following a double lung transplant. Askren, who previously competed as an MMA fighter, pro boxer, and Olympic wrestler, was hospitalized in June with severe pneumonia, placed on a ventilator, and later underwent a double lung transplant. His condition deteriorated severely, leading to a medically induced coma and multiple instances where he was believed to be dead. Upon waking from the coma, Askren experienced a profound spiritual awakening, declaring, "I just decided I was a Christian." Despite attending church with his wife for years, he had never personally embraced faith. "I went with my wife to church for 15 years because that was part of the deal. I said, 'Well, I’m not Christian, but I’ll support you.' And it was really weird when I woke up, I’m like 'I gotta do it,'" Askren shared in an interview with FloWrestling. Askren also revealed that he lost his memory during his hospitalization, recounting, "I don’t remember anything from May 28 to July 2, no recollection, no idea. I only died four times. The ticker stopped for about 20 seconds." The athlete expressed deep gratitude for the support he received during his recovery, including financial assistance from UFC boss Dana White and a $500,000 donation from YouTuber and boxer Jake Paul. Askren is now focused on his rehabilitation and plans to give back to his community, stating, "I’m more motivated than ever to get back and do what I can to help out the best I can to help out." Askren’s story highlights a remarkable transformation, blending personal resilience with a newfound commitment to faith.
