OVO Warns UK Must Electrify Home Heating to Meet Net Zero Goals

OVO, the energy company, has issued a stark warning that the UK risks failing its net zero targets unless home heating is rapidly electrified. Unveiled during London Climate Action Week, OVO’s Climate Transition Plan—titled Mind the Green Gap—calls for urgent action to slash emissions and transition to cleaner energy solutions. The plan identifies home heating as the “hardest, most critical, and most overlooked” piece of the climate puzzle, with gas boilers still dominating UK households.
OVO argues that real progress requires a reset of energy policy and collaboration between industry and government. The plan proposes key reforms, including shifting costs off electricity to make it cheaper than gas, building financial incentives for electric heat, and phasing out new gas boiler sales. It also demands reform of the REGO system to combat greenwashing and direct investment in renewables.
OVO is not just calling for change—it’s taking action. The company is increasing installations of solar panels and heat pumps, offering smart EV charging, and rewarding customers who shift electricity use to align with renewable energy supply. The next three years are critical, and OVO will revisit and update its transition plan every three years to ensure progress aligns with national net zero frameworks.
