President Donald Trump announced a historic peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan on Friday, marking the end of a 35-year conflict. The agreement, brokered at the White House, was signed by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, with Trump heralding the deal as a major step toward lasting peace.
"Thirty-five years they fought, and now they're friends. And they're going to be friends for a long time," Trump said during the ceremony. The deal not only resolves territorial disputes but also establishes new economic ties between the two nations and the United States. Additionally, a transit route connecting Azerbaijan's exclave of Nakhchivan has been named in Trump's honor, symbolizing the newfound cooperation.
The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, particularly over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, had escalated in 2023, with Azerbaijan launching a military invasion. Despite international efforts, negotiations stalled until Trump intervened.
"This accord is a testament to the power of diplomacy and the relentless pursuit of peace," Trump added. "As president, my highest aspiration is to bring peace and success to the world."
The agreement reflects Trump's growing reputation as a conflict resolver, following previous successes in brokering ceasefires between Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Syria, and India and Pakistan.
Azerbaijan's President Aliyev praised the deal, stating, "I'm sure that Armenia and Azerbaijan will find courage and responsibility to reconcile." Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan also expressed optimism about the future.
The White House described the deal as a win for regional stability and U.S. influence in the region. However, the foreign ministries of Armenia and Azerbaijan did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This peace deal underscores Trump's commitment to resolving global conflicts and strengthening U.S. ties with key international partners.
