Trump Imposes New Tariffs on Canada Amid Trade Tensions

President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that his latest round of tariffs will take effect on Aug. 7, later than the previously expected Aug. 1 deadline. The delay came ahead of Friday’s midnight deadline for foreign countries to finalize trade deals with the United States.
Notably, Trump imposed a 35% tariff on Canada, effective immediately, up from the previous 25%. The administration cited Canada’s “continued inaction and retaliation” over efforts to curb fentanyl and illicit drug flows across the U.S.-Canada border. Meanwhile, tariffs on Mexico for the same reason were delayed for 90 days as trade negotiations continue.
Earlier this year, Trump declared a national emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to address the public health crisis caused by fentanyl trafficking. The administration’s moves reflect its ongoing efforts to pressure trading partners into addressing drug-related concerns while navigating broader trade dynamics.
The updated tariffs underscore Trump’s administration’s hardline approach to trade policy, aiming to leverage economic measures to achieve security and diplomatic objectives.
