Trump Imposes 25% Tariff on India Over Russian Oil Purchases

President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, bringing the total levies to 50%, in response to India's continued purchase of Russian oil. The move aims to deter countries from supporting Russia's economy amid its aggression in Ukraine.
The executive order, signed on Wednesday, cites India's role in "fueling the Russian war machine" by importing and reselling Russian oil at a profit. The new tariffs will take effect on August 27, while the previously announced 25% tariffs will go into effect on Thursday.
Critics, including former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley, argue that targeting India risks harming a key U.S. ally. Haley called for a reversal, noting that China, a major buyer of Russian and Iranian oil, received a 90-day tariff pause. India's Ministry of External Affairs also condemned the tariffs as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable," emphasizing that energy imports are based on market factors and national interest.
Analysts project a 30% decline in India's exports to the U.S. this fiscal year, amounting to a $25 billion trade loss. India also highlighted the EU's $78 billion trade with Russia, questioning the fairness of singling out India.
The U.S. continues to pressure nations to reduce ties with Russia, though challenges remain in aligning global efforts against Moscow's aggression.
