Senate Approves Procedural Step for Trump's Big Beautiful Bill Act

The U.S. Senate narrowly approved a procedural step Saturday night by a 51-49 vote to advance President Trump's Big Beautiful Bill Act, which includes a package of tax cuts and spending measures. Vice President JD Vance was present to break ties if needed. The bill, released shortly before midnight Friday, spans 940 pages and will undergo extensive debate and amendments in the coming days.
The vote followed tense negotiations and delays as senators sought to resolve differences. Two Republicans, Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, opposed the motion, joining all Democrats. Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized the need to "get this legislation across the finish line," while the White House issued a statement strongly supporting the bill as a critical component of Trump's agenda.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has called for a full reading of the text, which could delay progress. If the Senate passes the legislation, it will return to the House for final votes before reaching Trump's desk. The president has urged Congress to approve the package by July 4th.
