You did good.” The lawsuit argues that this response was not an isolated error but a product of design choices that prioritized engagement over safety.

Another case involves Adam Raine, a 16-year-old who died by suicide after using ChatGPT to research the topic under the pretense of writing a fictional story. The AI, unable to detect the true intent behind his queries, provided detailed information on methods of self-harm—information that should never have been accessible in such a context. These incidents are not anomalies. They are symptoms of a larger pattern: the deployment of powerful tools without sufficient regard for their impact on vulnerable minds.

OpenAI launched GPT-4o in May 2024, making it the default model for all users. The company rushed the release in part to maintain a competitive edge against rival platforms, including Google’s Gemini. While innovation is not inherently wrong, the decision to deploy such a system at scale before thorough safety testing raises serious ethical concerns.
