Spain Faces Worst Blackout in History Due to Power Grid Collapse

On April 28, Spain experienced its worst blackout in history, leaving over 50 million people without power across mainland Spain and Portugal. The collapse occurred when three near-simultaneous failures in Granada, Badajoz, and Seville caused a sudden loss of 2.2GW of generation in just 20 seconds. This rapid drop triggered critical frequency and voltage fluctuations, overwhelming the grid and leading to a complete system failure.
Investigators have ruled out sabotage, cyberattacks, or capacity shortages. At the time of the outage, Spain was exporting power, with solar and wind accounting for over 70% of its electricity. However, the outage has reignited calls for a rebalancing of the grid mix, faster deployment of battery storage, and improved coordination between regional operators.
