Google’s Veo 3 AI Fuels Racist Content on TikTok

Google’s Veo 3 video generator, launched in May, has raised concerns over its misuse to create racist and antisemitic content on TikTok. MediaMatters reported a surge in AI-generated videos targeting Black individuals, immigrants, and Jewish people, using harmful stereotypes. These videos, marked by the “Veo” watermark, exploit the tool’s high-quality output to spread hate.
Despite TikTok’s strict policies against hate speech and Google’s Prohibited Use Policy banning hate promotion, the content has proliferated. TikTok relies on a mix of AI and human moderation, but the sheer volume of uploads has hindered timely enforcement. Over half of the accounts cited in the report were banned before publication, with the rest subsequently removed.
Google claims its AI models include guardrails to prevent misuse, but Veo 3’s inability to detect subtle racial tropes allows users to bypass restrictions. The integration of Veo 3 into YouTube Shorts could further amplify the spread of such content.
While both platforms have clear guidelines, enforcement gaps and the realism of AI-generated videos highlight the challenges in curbing this issue. The incident underscores the difficulty of preventing harmful AI misuse, even with robust safeguards in place.
