Trump Administration Announces Plan for 30 Offshore Oil Lease Sales

The Trump administration has unveiled a plan to conduct 30 auctions for oil drilling rights in U.S. waters over the next 15 years, significantly expanding access for fossil fuel exploration. This initiative, mandated by the recently passed Republican tax and spending bill, replaces the Biden administration’s strategy of holding just three offshore oil lease sales over five years.
The Interior Department announced the schedule, which includes biannual auctions in the Gulf of Mexico—where most of the nation’s offshore oil is produced—through 2039, with an additional sale planned for 2040. President Trump recently renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated, “The One Big Beautiful Bill Act is a landmark step toward unleashing America’s energy potential. Under President Trump’s leadership, we’re putting in place a bold, long-term program that strengthens American Energy Dominance, creates good-paying jobs, and ensures we continue to responsibly develop our offshore resources.”
This plan reflects a shift in federal energy policy, prioritizing fossil fuel development over previous efforts to reduce reliance on public lands and waters for oil and gas extraction.
