Trump and EU Strike Historic Trade Deal at Turnberry Resort

President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a landmark trade deal between the U.S. and the European Union following their meeting at Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland on July 27, 2025. The deal, described as the largest of its kind, includes a 15% tariff on automobiles and other goods, opening European markets to U.S. exports, which Trump claimed were previously “essentially closed.”
Under the agreement, Europe will purchase $750 billion in American energy and make $600 billion in additional investments in the U.S. Von der Leyen acknowledged the need to rebalance the one-sided trade relationship, stating, “We have a surplus. The United States has a deficit, and we have to rebalance it.” Trump emphasized the significance of the deal, calling it “bigger than any other deal” and expressing confidence in its long-term impact.
The deal sets an Aug. 1 deadline for tariffs to take effect, with Trump asserting he would not lower the 15% rate. He also noted that pharmaceuticals would not be included in the agreement, citing the importance of U.S. self-reliance in that sector.
The announcement underscores Trump’s reputation as a tough negotiator and dealmaker, with von der Leyen commending his efforts. The trade deal marks a potential turning point in U.S.-EU relations, promising to enhance economic ties and reduce trade imbalances.
