Trump Signs Executive Orders to Revitalize U.S. Nuclear Power Industry

President Donald Trump has signed four executive orders to overhaul the U.S. nuclear industry, aiming to quadruple domestic nuclear power production within 25 years. The orders direct the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to cut red tape and expedite licensing for new reactors, requiring decisions on industry applications within 18 months. Trump also invoked the Defense Production Act to strengthen the domestic uranium supply chain, reducing reliance on foreign sources like Russia.
The orders call for federal agencies to explore suitable sites for nuclear plants on federal lands and military bases. Additionally, they prioritize the development of small modular reactors (SMRs), which are faster and cheaper to build. The U.S. currently generates 19% of its electricity from nuclear power, but its nuclear industry has stagnated, with only two new reactors built in nearly 50 years.
Meanwhile, China is rapidly expanding its nuclear capacity, with 10 reactors approved annually and 26 under construction, threatening to overtake France as the world’s second-largest nuclear power producer. Trump’s initiative seeks to reclaim U.S. leadership in nuclear energy, addressing regulatory inefficiencies and fostering innovation in advanced reactor designs.
The executive orders mark a significant shift in federal policy, aiming to modernize the nuclear industry and ensure energy independence while competing globally.
