Trump Ends California EV Mandate, Bans Windmills

President Donald Trump has signed legislation to repeal California’s electric vehicle (EV) mandate, calling it a “catastrophic” policy that harmed the U.S. auto industry. The GOP leader also announced plans to ban windmills nationwide, citing concerns over property values, health risks, and environmental impact.
Trump described California’s requirement to transition nearly all new vehicles to electric by 2035 as “crazy rules” that left automakers building cars for two separate markets. “You can’t do anything about it, they can’t take us to court, they can’t do any of the things they can do with executive orders, and it’s permanent,” he declared.
California reported only 23% of new vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2025 were zero-emission, despite the state’s aggressive goals. Trump’s move has drawn criticism from environmentalists and automakers, who argue EVs are a critical part of reducing emissions.
The president also targeted wind turbines, labeling them “garbage” that devalues property and harms wildlife. “If you have a windmill anywhere near your house, congratulations—your house just went down 75% in value,” Trump said. He dismissed wind power as a “scam,” though climate advocates counter that it’s a vital clean energy source.
Trump’s actions reflect his administration’s broader push to promote fossil fuels and nuclear energy while opposing renewable energy initiatives.
