Trump and Xi Jinping Hold Extensive Trade Talks

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in a lengthy telephone conversation on Thursday, focusing on the intricacies of their recently agreed-upon trade deal. Trump described the call, which lasted approximately one and a half hours, as highly productive, resulting in a positive outcome for both nations. He emphasized that the discussion was "almost entirely" centered on trade matters and noted that Xi had extended an invitation for Trump and his wife Melania to visit China. In turn, Trump extended an invitation for Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan to visit the United States. The call followed a week of tensions, during which Trump criticized China for allegedly violating the terms of the trade agreement reached in May. Trump had previously described Xi as "extremely difficult to work with" and accused China of failing to uphold its commitments. However, following the call, Trump indicated that the two leaders had resolved their differences, stating, "We had a very good talk, and we’ve straightened out any complexity." The trade deal includes significant reductions in tariffs: the United States will reduce tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, while China will reduce tariffs on U.S. imports from 125% to 10%. Despite the challenges, Trump expressed confidence in the deal, stating, "We have a deal with China, and we’re going to just make sure that everybody understands what the deal is." China has urged the United States to address its own mistakes and reverse discriminatory restrictions, according to a statement from the Chinese embassy. However, Trump remains optimistic about the agreement, signaling a potential stabilization in U.S.-China trade relations.
