Google has reported a dramatic 33x reduction in the energy cost of handling AI text queries over the past year, marking a significant step toward mitigating the environmental impact of artificial intelligence. The company's analysis, which tracked energy use in real-world applications, revealed that a median Gemini Apps text prompt now consumes just 0.24 watt-hours of energy, equivalent to about nine seconds of TV use. This improvement reflects both technological advancements and increased reliance on renewable energy sources. The energy reduction stems from a combination of factors, including optimized software architectures, such as Mixture-of-Experts, which activate only the necessary portions of AI models for specific tasks. Google's custom AI accelerators and efficient data center management further contribute to these gains. While the environmental impact of individual queries remains low, the cumulative effect of rapidly increasing AI usage poses challenges. However, Google's efforts demonstrate the potential for significant efficiency improvements in the field. The company's transparent methodology, detailed in a report resembling an academic study, underscores its commitment to advancing environmentally responsible AI practices. By sharing its approach, Google aims to encourage broader adoption of comprehensive measurement frameworks across the industry, ensuring that future AI innovations align with sustainability goals.
